University Place
Caleb begin its
quest to build affordable single-family housing beginning in 2000. In
2001, they have enhanced this process by announcing University Place
as an area to begin a revitalization plan. University Place is the subdivision
which most people call the “Avenues” just outside the north
gate of Southern University.
This plan began
in March with a Fix-Up Campaign on a house located on Avenue D. This
campaign was supported by contribution made by the Home Depot, Sherwin
Williams Paint, Mid City Redevelopment, Hibernia National Bank and volunteer
labor by Omega Psi Phi.
In addition, Caleb
has purchased lots on Avenue D, Avenue E and Blount Road. They have
developed two houses on Blount and is completing another on Avenue D.
Under this plan, they will develop 12 new houses, conduct four Fix-Up
Campaign and work toward creating and strengthening the Neighborhood
Association.
Financial support
for this project is provided through Whitney CDC, Bank One CDC, LISC,
Urban Land and Fannie Mae Corporation.
